Patchwork presents The Breath Between—the Phenomenon of Story (or: how wonder and story converge into knowing)
Storyteller Denise McCormack returns to Philadelphia with The Breath Between, an evocative solo storytelling performance shaped by personal narrative, mythology, folk and fairy tales, and spiritual reflection. Through story and song, McCormack shares the profound moments of clarity that have marked her own journey—those rare, breath-catching flashes when meaning crystallizes, time holds still, and truth reveals itself.
These stories are revelatory. They are not merely told—they are lived, felt, and shared in the space between ordinary and extraordinary, where wonder and story converge into knowing.
This production is presented through the support of Patchwork: A Storytelling Guild, whose mission is to foster the art of storytelling and support tellers throughout the region.
Denise McCormack is a storyteller, speaker, and educator who reveres story as a sacred and transformative tool—a metaphorical book of instruction that opens doors to insight, growth, and connection. Guided by the mantra “There is a story for every time and purpose under heaven,” McCormack shares tales that illuminate meaning, stir memory, and invite clarity.
Her work explores the intersection of personal narrative, myth, poetry, and song, often dwelling in the spiritual undercurrents of story—the space where wonder and knowing converge. She believes that stories, even the simplest ones, offer profound truths and have the power to draw us together in community and contemplation.
In addition to her work on stage and in classrooms, McCormack brings her storytelling expertise to roles as a research consultant, video specialist, and guest spiritual speaker—helping others distill complex ideas into compelling narratives for learning, documentation, creative projects, and spiritual reflection.
She has been featured at national and regional venues, including the National Storytelling Network conferences, NJ Storytelling Festivals (at Grounds for Sculpture and Howell Living History Farm), the Ice House in Bethlehem, Godfrey Daniels, Artists Without Borders in NYC, and Philadelphia stages such as The Rotunda and Parkway Central Library.
McCormack serves as president of the Patchwork Storytelling Guild, is a board member of the Folk Art Consortium, and regularly offers programs and workshops on The Art of Storytelling—as a means of artistic expression, spiritual inquiry, and practical transformation.
She is especially grateful for The Rotunda, whose ongoing support of Patchwork has helped cultivate a vibrant storytelling community in Philadelphia.
In this, my soul delights—through story, service, and connection.
