Patchwork: A Storytelling Guild is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1984 with the mission to promote storytelling as both a vibrant art form and a tool for personal and social transformation. Originally formed in response to the decline of storytelling in the oral tradition, Patchwork has remained committed to preserving and revitalizing storytelling through training, performance, and education, with an emphasis on community engagement and inclusion. We believe in the power of stories from all backgrounds and cultures and work to create opportunities for diverse communities to share their voices and visions.
Throughout its history, Patchwork has provided an open forum for storytellers and audiences, offering events that connect people through the shared experience of storytelling. These events include performances, workshops, and community outreach programs that strive to make storytelling accessible to a wide range of audiences. In response to contemporary trends and challenges—including the aging of members and the COVID-19 pandemic—Patchwork has embraced virtual programming and collaborated with cultural venues such as The Rotunda in Philadelphia and the Ice House in Bethlehem, PA, to expand its reach.
The organization remains a member-supported entity, currently governed by a Board of Directors composed of diverse professionals in the arts and community development. Board members include Denise McCormack (President), Ingrid Bohn (Treasurer), Doug Roydon (Director/Owner of Ice House), Gina Renzi (Director of The Rotunda), Norm Williams (President of Folk Arts Consortium), and other advisory members. Together, they guide Patchwork’s efforts to engage communities, promote the storytelling tradition, and sustain the organization’s growth and legacy.
Patchwork’s funding efforts are currently focused on supporting storytelling community events, particularly at the Ice House in Bethlehem. These events aim to foster an inclusive environment where storytellers can connect with audiences and be compensated for their work. Funding would be directed toward modest stipends for storytellers and to expand the organization’s promotional efforts, ensuring that storytelling remains accessible to all.
